Morning Beach Conditions
October 5, 2024
A RED FLAG DAY with HIGH rip current risk at the beaches of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Buxton. Ocean conditions will lead to powerful rip currents and a 3-5 foot surf. Ocean swimming is not recommended, stay out of the water!
A YELLOW FLAG DAY with MODERATE rip current risk south of Cape Hatteras including Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Only experienced surf swimmers who know how to escape a rip current should enter the water. Never swim alone and always take flotation!
Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which is around 350 pm today.
On the northern beaches expect mostly sunny skies all day. On Hatteras and Ocracoke islands mostly cloudy skies this morning before turning mostly sunny in the afternoon. Temperatures in the mid 70s with northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Water temperatures: Duck Pier...74. Jennettes Pier...73. Oregon Inlet Marina...75. Rodanthe Pier...71. Avon Pier...74.
Ocean Rescue staffing is at off season levels. Many beaches that had lifeguard stands are now unguarded or covered by a roving patrol. Always swim near a lifeguard. If help is needed, know your location and call 911!
